Situated just a stone’s throw from the ancient cathedral city of Canterbury; Whitstable hotels and other accommodation options are perfectly placed for both business and holiday travellers. It's location on the North Kent coastline, just beside Herne Bay, makes it very popular as a seaside resort. It is exceedingly easy to get to from London via the Victoria train station: It is this fantastic rail service that made it so popular with Londoners seeking the fresh air of the seaside to invigorate them.
Today Whitstable is an attractive seaside town, which attracts throngs of visitors from all over eager to taste for themselves, the fresh air and oysters for which this whimsical town is known. One of the interesting features of the town's sandy beach is the shingle bar known locally as The Street, which stretches out to sea for half a mile at right angles to the shore.
Another striking feature left over from the Second World War is the Maunsell Sea Fort, which stands nine miles out from Whitstable, and is made up of a series of fortified concrete towers, made as a strategic part of the country’s war defences. The faded beauty of the sea fort is counterbalance by the modern power and efficiency of the thirty wind turbines of the off shore wind farm. Both the sea fort and the wind farm can be seen from the bay, and boat trips from the harbour are available to see them at close hand: You can also stay in a traditional windmill in the town.
The quirky nature of the town is best expressed by the criss-crossing alleys, which lead to the sea from most parts of the town, and were used by the local fishermen to move hastily to the shore. The narrowest of them all is called Squeeze Gut Alley, and is literally that: most people have to walk sideways down it due to its narrow proportions.
The town is a favourite destination for those enjoying water sports, with its established Yacht Club and host of other water-based activities. The Yacht Club is one of the oldest in England and takes part in many competitions each year. Whitstable is also the host of the annual International Water-ski Championships.
The May Day celebrations in the town are quite spectacular, with lots of traditional English dancing, such as the Morris Men, with the Jack-in-the-Green parade through the streets of the town. The Jack-in-the-Green tradition dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, where people are dressed entirely in green foliage, and paraded as part of the spring festivities.
